Cranbrook Author Visit

On 05 April 13, I took an early morning trip Cranbrook in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.  The last time I visited Cranbrook was for a field trip with students from my own classroom.  If you have ever visited Cranbrook, you have an understanding of how wonderful things are there.  So, when I confirmed my Author Visit, I felt really special to be able to talk about writing to second graders. 

 

Wrinkles Wallace: Knights of Night School is a book aimed at 3^rd – 8^th graders. Clearly, reading an excerpt and explaining it to second graders was not going to really give them the writing and reading boost they would need for their level.  So, instead of going with the status quo, I brought out two picture books that I wrote.  I read Juice Fit for the Princess and A Dress Fit for the Princess.  In the past, I used Juice as a reader’s theater performance and I acted it out with a narrator and a co-worker.  

While neither book has illustrations, the students were charged with the tasks of inferring, creating and sharing their own text to picture connections, and displaying overall comprehension of the stories. Those were the keys we focused on and our mission was accomplished. In the end, having the students share their thoughts as I read the story helped us all to bring the words to life.  Great times!
